The Moorings of Mackerel Sky by MZ
They say Mackerel Sky was founded when Captain Burrbank first saw Nimuë the Mermaid and forgot the sea. Stricken by love, he moored his tall ship and made camp on the highest cliff, hoping to forever gaze upon her beauty. That camp became a settlement, the settlement a town, the town a community both blessed and cursed by their tempestuous affair.
Three hundred years later, the legend of the Mermaid and the Captain who loved her still invigorates and haunts the inhabitants of the small Maine lobstering town. In this close-knit town famous for its infamous mermaids, community is built through love and lore—willful elements that the townsfolk will have to harness if Mackerel Sky is to endure for another three hundred years.
Vivid Motion Dance is proud to bring these stories to the stage through new dance works inspired by MZ’s debut novel, The Moorings of Mackerel Sky.

HeartSpeak & Down The Rabbit Hole
HeartSpeak We dance to express, to connect, and to feel. To paraphrase Ruth St. Denis; dance is the body speaking a truth that is often too deep for words alone to uncover. Co-directed by Beth Alexander & Jessica Jane Means, HeartSpeak is a collection of new works connected by the theme of how dance heals us.
Down The Rabbit Hole The White Rabbit’s life of order and routine is suddenly turned into chaos with a familiar realization that “I’m late for work!?!” Follow director Gerry Shannon’s White Rabbit into a world of unexpected madness, with crazy encounters and being chased by a curiously annoying young lass as we fall deeper, dancing Down the Rabbit Hole.

Spring 2024
Grania: Pirate Queen
Co-directed by Scott Potter and Ali Odlin, Vivid Motion Dance’s spring show tells the tale of Grania “Grace” O’ Malley (Gráinne Ní Mháille), a woman born from a seafaring western Irish clan who becomes the most feared chieftain and pirate captain of the Irish seas. Her spirit and passion for adventure are representative of the country that she eventually finds herself struggling to preserve.
Family, friends, and foes alike ebb and flow with the tides that she sails—all while she and her people fall under the lengthening shadow of the English Empire. Grania eventually comes face to face with the formidable Queen Elizabeth, her greatest rival…and perhaps the only person who could understand her.

Summer 2024
Eclipse & Helen of Troy
Eclipse is an original dance show from founding member MJ Emerson that combines Alice in Wonderland, a soldier recovering from battle, and a young couple facing their future. But why does the White Rabbit keep showing up? And whose story is this anyway? Set to Pink Floyd's iconic Dark Side of the Moon album, Eclipse is sure to take you on a trip. Sit back and enjoy the ride!
History tells us Helen is the face that launched a thousand ships - leading to the wooden horse and the destruction of Troy. But history is written by the victors and the men. In Vivid Motion Dance's feminist reimagining of Helen of Troy, Helen goes from a puppet of the gods and the men in her life to a leader and champion for those wronged by men, the gods, and war -- aka everyone.
With music from Bridgerton, Pink, M.I.A, and Shania Twain, emerging director Arrin Rhinehardt brings an inspiring and fun original dance production that only Vivid Motion could do!

QUEER 2024
Vivid Motion Dance's newest original show "QUEER: An exploration of LGBTQIA+ experiences through dance" is a benefit, with all proceeds donated to Camp Pride Florida.
Twenty vignettes, performed in two acts, are choreographed to engage the audience with the emotionality of various queer experiences. The show’s opening story weaves through the individual pieces of the production. A young person is visited by aliens and vibes really well with them. But after the aliens leave, the young person can't seem to fit in with humans. They dream of becoming an astronaut so they can go to space and find their alien friends. So they go to astronaut school! They excel in training and are able to go to space. Do they reconnect with the aliens? Is it a joyful reunion? The answers are revealed in the finale!
Though told from the LBGTQIA+ perspective, many of the stories touch on universal human themes such as loneliness and not fitting in, feelings that one must hide their true self, a first crush, breaking up, wanting to love and be loved. 💞
